Caretta Caretta Turtles
Caretta Caretta Loggerhead sea turtles are the symbol of the ecology of Zakynthos in the Greek Islands. Greece In particular Zakynthos, is the largest nesting ground for Caretta Caretta sea turtles in the Mediterranean Sea with over 3,000 nests each year.
The National Marine Park of Zakynthos was established to help protect the Caretta Caretta Turtles, particularly because the growth of tourism in Zante was threatening some of their nesting grounds.
There are now some restrictions on some South West Zante beaches after sunset and a few are closed altogether from tourists. Zante in the Greek Islands is considered to be the largest nesting ground in the Mediterranean for the Caretta Caretta loggerhead sea turtle.
- Caretta Caretta turtles in Zante are commonly called the “loggerhead” sea turtles due to their large heads with a horny beak that is thicker than other sea turtles. Caretta Caretta turtles in Zakynthos are the largest hard-shelled turtle in the world.
- Caretta Caretta loggerhead sea turtles are the world’s most-studied and well-known sea-turtle. An adult loggerhead turtles weigh between 77 and 160 kg, and measures between 31 to 45 inches long. Their shell is a golden brown colour, with skin tones from yellow to brown.
- The Caretta Caretta has become an endangered species, in part due to the development of tourism in their major nesting grounds.
The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is one of the world’s most endangered marine mammals, with fewer than 600 individuals currently surviving. The Mediterranean Monk seal (Monachus monachus) is one of the larger species of seals in the world. It is around 2.5 m in length and weighs about 300 kg. It can live to the age of 45. The greater part of its population is situated in Greek waters and is estimated to be about 250-300 seals.
Mediterranean monk seals mostly seek refuge in inaccessible caves, often along remote, cliff-bound coasts. Such caves may have underwater entrances, not visible from the water line. The Mediterranean Monk seal prefers rocky and inaccessible shores on the islands or adjacent areas, and are thus found on the Sporades, NW Cyclades, Ionion and Dodecanese islands. They live only in clean, non-polluted waters, so the presence of the Monachus monachus seal in Greece is an indication of the health of the sea environment and part of its rich biodiversity.
